Occupational Therapy

Many people at some time in their life may experience disability. Some people may make a full or reasonable recovery, which allows them to carry out everyday tasks with little or no problems.

For others the result of disability can have a greater impact. They may find that tasks they used to be able to do become increasingly difficult or they are no longer able to do them. For some their disability may mean they are dependent on their families and friends to help them.

For those people whose disability has a profound effect on their day to day life, Cadence Rehabilitation Services may be able to assist.

We can help you, your family member, case managers, housing associations and charities to get the right Occupational Therapy

We offer:

  • Private Occupational Therapy
  • Immediate appointments
  • Home visits
  • Simple packages of care
  • Highly skilled team of experts

Occupational Therapists are specialists in assessing, treating and rehabilitating individuals with a disability, illness or injury. Our aim is to increase the individual’s independence and function in the worker role through a holistic and client centred approach whilst encompassing the individual’s physical, psychological and social needs.

The OT Practice accepts referrals typically from insurers and solicitors and can offer a wide range of interventions for individuals with a disability, health condition or impairment enabling them to overcome barriers to work

Vocational Rehabilitation Initial Assessments

This is a comprehensive initial assessment that gathers detailed information on the individual’s health/medical history, their current performance ability with activities of daily living and details of their work history. This also includes identifying transferable skills and where appropriate some initial vocational exploration. The assessment also includes an action plan with mutually agreed goals to initiate the rehabilitation process

Workplace Assessment

This assessment is completed with the employee present to establish the work tasks that the individual is able to perform taking into consideration their illness, injury or disability. Where appropriate the therapist can also use functional capacity, workstation and manual handling assessments incorporated in this visit

 Cognitive assessment and training

It can be difficult for health professionals to accurately assess cognitive function in older people. Yet this is one of the most important assessments clinicians make, particularly those working in old age psychiatry and geriatric medicine. It is essential to detecting dementia. Cadence Rehabilitation Services undertake cognitive assessments:

  • in a number of settings – primary care, specialist memory clinics, acute care and care homes
  • for a variety of purposes – screening, diagnosing, staging and measuring change
  • over a number of domains – memory, language, visuospatial ability and executive function

Neurology

We are experienced in treating a range of neurological conditions, including:

  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Traumatic Brain or Head Injury
  • Parkinson's Disease
  • Motor Neurone Disease
  • Stroke

Every client is given a thorough, individualised home assessment to establish what his or her difficulties are. Subject to our clients’ wishes, family members or carers can also be involved.

Treatments for such symptoms as lack of balance or coordination, memory problems, weakness of limbs, ‘freezing’, fatigue or incontinence can be devised by our physiotherapists, while our occupational therapists can focus on minimising their effects on day-to-day life.

This may include the provision of equipment or adaptations to clients’ homes which maximise independence - we regularly provide specifications for wet rooms, ramps and ground floor extensions.

Hand Therapy

Hand therapist assess and treat the hand and upper limb to effectively reduce pain, inflammation and scaring and maximize independence. We regularly help client’s in the following areas:

  • Hand and upper limb trauma injuries
  • Pain management
  • Support post hand surgery
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Rehabilitation following joint replacements

From supplying aids for day-to-day living, or splints which allow your hand to rest in comfort, to exercises that increase flexibility and range of motion in the joints, every client is given a thorough, individualised home assessment and treatment programme.

Fall Prevention

Falling over is a major cause of disability, with many falls resulting in significant injury leading to reduced confidence, social isolation and increased fragility.

However, many falls are easily preventable with a few adjustments around the home, along with physical activity to increase strength and balance.

Cadence Rehabilitation offers Falls Prevention plans and assessments, all conducted within your living environment, to reduce the risk of falling while increasing mobility and confidence. Our plans and assessments include:

  • A full initial assessment of the person’s physical aptitude, their domestic environment and their mobility out-of-doors
  • Recommendations for home adaptations to reduce the risk of falls (installation can be arranged if desired)
  • An individualised, illustrated exercise programme to help increase strength, balance and flexibility
  • Guidance and practical demonstrations to help you cope in the event that a fall does occur
  • Advice to family and carers

Thorough and detailed reports will be provided after each assessment.

Hand splint

  • Wrist and hand splints are provided to people who need protection and support for painful, swollen or weak joints and their surrounding structures. Their designs make sure you position your wrist and hands correctly
  • Splints to Reduce Muscle-Tendon Tightness and Adherence
  • Specialized in hand & arm splints to help patients return to daily living

Spasticity management

  • We offer a comprehensive, responsive multidisciplinary service to those with spasticity associated with any neurological condition. Therapies provided include multidisciplinary assessments and specialist OT and physiotherapy
  • Spasticity is the medical term for when muscles involuntarily “seize up,” contracting and becoming tense when they shouldn’t. It’s as if the patient is flexing the affected muscles – but without meaning to, and without being able to stop. The result is stiffness, rigidity and muscle pain
  • Occupational therapy might include such things as learning new strategies for getting around, dressing and grooming. It also includes advice on acquiring and using devices such as wheelchairs and special equipment to assist people with disabilities

Daily Living Assessments

  • Activity of Daily Living (ADL) assessments including access to property, mobility and transfers (on/off bath, toilet, bed and chairs)
  • Promoting independent living by reducing risk of slips, trips and falls to clients or your tenants
  • Feasibility visits in line with pending or recent National
  • Standards inspections for nursing and residential homes
  • Advice and information on seating and other matters as part of the purchase of specialist (often powered) equipment such as powered vehicles, chairs and beds
  • Housing needs reports to ascertain its suitability and provide recommendations for future needs
  • Providing work assessments to determine 'fitness to return" or performance at work
  • Working with case management companies as part of a package of rehabilitation services to clients following an accident or injury
  • Complaint or tribunal reviews - provision of an Assessment and report as part complaint process
  • Deliver and fit service - following up any recommendations provided by the Assessor including sourcing of products, organising delivery and fitting of the products at the clients home.
